The Tragic Legacy of India’s Weavers

India’s rich weaving tradition was once the pride of the world, until it was dismantled by colonial rule. In 1834, Governor-General William Bentinck remarked, “The bones of the cotton weavers are bleaching the plains of India.” This chilling line reflects the devastation of India’s textile heritage when cheap, mass-produced British goods flooded our markets.
